“Learn tango from the maestro who preserves its living soul.”
Ana María Shapira (also spelled Schapira) is one of Buenos Aires’ most respected tango teachers, choreographers, and cultural custodians. With nearly three decades of experience, she has trained hundreds of dancers weekly at her academy, judged the World Tango Championship, and preserved the authentic steps of traditional milongueros for future generations.
She has been a professional tango teacher and dancer for more than 25 years, teaching both Argentines and international students. At her academy, Ana trains over 200 students every week with the support of carefully selected instructors—an unparalleled number in Buenos Aires’ tango scene.
Her teaching goes beyond technique: Ana provides men and women with the tools to dance confidently in Buenos Aires milongas and on dance floors worldwide. She is dedicated to recovering and protecting spontaneous choreographies created by talented but little-known milongueros, ensuring these authentic expressions are not lost.

Ana has taught tango and waltz, led specialized seminars for both men and women, and continues to be a judge at the Tango Festival organized by the Cultural Secretariat of Buenos Aires, where she has also taught since 2002. She was a featured teacher at the World Tango Festival in 2004 and 2005, and has given classes at iconic venues such as Salón Canning, Porteño y Bailarín, El Beso, Niño Bien, and Aires Tangueros.
Today, Ana María Shapira is recognized as a guardian of tango’s tradition and creativity, inspiring students with her passion, rigor, and commitment to keeping the dance alive in its most authentic form.
